Power Year for Pumpkins: High Temperatures Yield Bountiful Harvest

(SOLON, Ohio) – August, 2011 – While much of the country has been suffering from unusually high temperatures this summer, the weather seems to be perfect for growing pumpkin! That’s right, thanks to Mother Nature and the hard work of the dedicated pumpkin farmers in Morton, Illinois – the pumpkin capital of the world! - LIBBY’S Pumpkin is happy to report that consumers will be able to find a bountiful supply of their beloved pumpkin on grocer’s shelves in plenty of time for the 2011 holiday season.

However, this has not always been the case. Abnormally heavy rains made harvesting nearly impossible in 2009. While the 2010 harvest was better, shortages persisted, leaving many Americans searching for enough pumpkin to make their favorites for the holiday season and beyond. "We're hopeful the 2011 harvest is a great one," said Evan Lunde of LIBBY’s Pumpkin.

LIBBY’S Pumpkin has been a trusted ingredient in America’s pantries for generations and the key to a homemade treat that you can be proud to serve. Beloved by cooks across the land and always a family favorite, few foods can claim LIBBY’S Pumpkin’s more than 75 years of heritage and tradition.

Curious about how LIBBY’S Pumpkin is grown? Thanks to the folks at LIBBY’S, you can now see for yourself! They’ve created an educational video which highlights the technique LIBBY’S has used for over 80 years to grow the pumpkin perfect for that classic holiday recipe, LIBBY’S Famous Pumpkin Pie.

LIBBY’S is committed to producing only the highest quality, 100% pure pumpkin for consumers. A nutritional powerhouse, pumpkin’s popularity as an everyday ingredient continues to increase. It is an excellent source of fiber, high in vitamin A, naturally gluten-free, sodium-free, low fat, and low calorie. An incredibly versatile ingredient, pumpkin can be enjoyed by simply mixing in a spoonful to applesauce, oatmeal or yogurt for extra nutrition and flavor. Pumpkin can also be used to create flavorful recipes like pumpkin soups, breads, desserts…and most importantly, pumpkin pie!
